According to Chris Tomasson the Denver Nuggets are deep in contract extensions with Nene’s agent Dan Fegan.
Nene told Denver Post’s Chris Dempsey last month that he was questioning whether or not he wanted to return to the Nuggets and also said that he may opt out of the last year of his contract, but since than his stance has changed.
Via Twitter, Tomasson said:
Sources say Nuggets deep into discussions with agent Dan Fegan to sign Nene to extension by June 30 and are optimistic extension to get done
Sources say preference of Nene, who can opt out of his contract by June 30, is to sign an extension and stay in Denver.
If the Nuggets can lock up Nene before the potential lockout it would fill a big void the Nuggets would have going into next season.
There is a chance that Nene would move back to power forward next season, which is his original position.
Finding A Gem In The Draft
The Nuggets brought in two players Wednesday that really impressed them. Morehead State senior Kenneth Faried and Tennessee freshman Tobias Harris.
Faried came back to the Pepsi Center, where he played arguably the biggest game in Morehead State history when they upset Louisville in the NCAA Tournament.
It was Faried’s drive that caught the Nuggets attention. Nuggets’ director of scouting Mike Bratz told the Denver Post:
The guy is a relentless rebounder, one of the best who has played in college. With his energy level and consistency, he’s got a lot going for him.
Faried has a lot of similar qualities to Ben Wallace and Dennis Rodman, he is a relentless rebounder, great defender and a tireless worker. They also all went to a small school. Wallace went to Virginia Union and Rodman attended Southeastern Oklahoma State.
If he is around with the 22nd pick he would add to the Nuggets depth in the frontcourt and would have to fight for minutes with Timofey Mozgov, Nene, Kosta Koufos, Chris Andersen and Al Harrington.
Harris would also be an ideal pick for the Nuggets. His size, youth, work and versatility is rare in the 2011 draft and if he is around this late in draft he could be a steal. Harris has lost weight since the first time he visited the Nuggets, but his value is skyrocketing and he may not be around with the 22nd pick.
Harris would fit in well for the Nuggets if they lose one of their four swingman that are free agents (Arron Afflalo, Wilson Chandler, J.R. Smith and Gary Forbes).
