Call it home court advantage or just call it good basketball. Either way, the Nuggets 12-3 record in January was good enough to earn coach George Karl Western Conference Coach of the Month honors.

The Nuggets 12-3 (.800) record was tied for the best in the league in January with the San Antonio Spurs. The 12 wins for the Nuggets are also the second most of all-time for the franchise in a month (13 wins in March, 1982).

This marks the 11th time that Karl has received Coach of the Month honors in his likely Hall of Fame career – fourth with the Nuggets. Karl is just the third coach in team history to have won the award and is the first coach in franchise history to receive the honors more than twice.

Not only did the Nuggets have success as a team in January, but Karl was able to pass two milestones as well. Karl passed Larry Brown for sixth place on the all-time wins list as a head coach with the Nuggets win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on January 20. Just three days later, Karl notched his 1,100 victory as a head coach as the Nuggets defeated the Houston Rockets.
