Nuggets to shut Lawson Down for year

Ty Lawson’s 2014 season has been something of an up and down affair.  It is going to end the way it progressed all season as the Denver Nuggets have not officially announced it, but Lawson will be shut down for the last 5 games of the regular season due to lingering ankle problems.  With the Nuggets out of playoff contention and maybe wanting to get a look at other players on their roster to see the validity of their remaining with the team, this is probably the right call for both the Nuggets and Lawson.  Lawson will end the season averaging  17.6 Points and 8.8 Assists per game which places him 2nd in the NBA in that category behind only Chris Paul with 10.8.  Lawson has played 62 games for the Nuggets this season which included an extended absence earlier in the year due to a rib injury.  Lawson is arguably the team’s best player and a player to build around in the offseason and I think this is this is a good move by the Nuggets because they will get to take a longer look at recently acquired Point Guard Aaaron Brooks who becomes a Free Agent at the of the Season.  They will also be able to get more playing time for Evan Fournier and Quincy Miller to see how they fit into the plans going forward.  Fournier has shown signs of becoming a very good NBA Player and possibly a future Point Gard in the league with his ball handling skills and ability to drive the basket and dish off or finish strong at the rim.  Miller’s time has increased since the trade of Jordan Hamilton to the Houston Rockets at the trade deadline and he has had several very nice outings for the Nuggets with his increased playing time.  This will also allow Lawson to begin his offseason conditioning program earlier as there is less chance that the ankle injury will linger long in to the offseason.  In my opinion, Lawson is still a very big part of the Nuggets future plans and taking precautions with his health in a lost season is good management as they need him to build around with any moves they make between now and the beginning of next season’s training camp.  Let’s hope that the team can surround Lawson with more weapons and all of the injured players that missed significant time this season are back in the fold next season and the Nuggets can make the jump back to being a consistent 50 win team and playoff contender year after year.  Follow us on Twitter @Nugg_Love.
