When the NBA Finals in the rear view mirror, the relative calm of the NBA offseason is upon us. Like the old wise tale says, though, it is just the calm before the storm. We are headed for an incredibly hectic offseason, and it all kicks off this Thursday with the draft.
This year’s class is projected to be great, with potential superstars abound in Wiggins, Embied, Parker, Exum, and many others. Whether or not these kids pan out and hit it big is another story all together, but NBA GMs will no doubt be salivating at the opportunity to draft a player they believe will be their next star. This NBA draft is being touted as the best class since the famed 2004 class that included Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, Carmelo Anthony, and Chris Bosh among many others, all of whom made a huge impact on their teams right away. Ironically enough, it is that class that is helping create what should be a crazy offseason. Which future star is getting drafted where? Who’s in? Who’s out? So many things are getting ready to happen, and the best thing we can do is find shelter for the impending storm.
This entire offseason will be centered around one man: Lebron James. He has decided to opt out of his final year with the Miami Heat and will no doubt be the focus of the offseason. Where is he going? Is he going home to Cleveland? Will he stay in South Beach? Will he play in the Staples Center for the Lakers or Clippers? Lebron has the entire sports world in the palm of his hands, with each analyst and their “sources” claiming that they know a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy that thinks Lebron will sign with a certain team. So be aware of the multitude of smoke screens that will be sent out either purposefully by Lebron, or accidentally leaked because Lebron happened to post something on his twitter of him in Cleveland.
Next there is Carmelo Anthony. The favorite to land Melo is Chicago, where a combination of him and Derrick Rose would be lethal, and enough to catapult the Bulls to the top of the East, especially if Lebron leaves Miami. Speaking of Miami, there is always that possibility of an Avengers-like super team of Melo, Bosh, Wade, and Lebron, so be on the look out for that, even though it is highly unlikely.
I would say that Winter is coming, but not even George RR Martin could write a script that is going to be filled with as many rumors, sources, draft boards, “he said she said” stories, and confusion as this NBA offseason. Strap in ladies and gents, we’re in for a heck of a ride.
