Thoughts On The Nuggets Huge Draft Night

The Denver Nuggets scored big time last night in the NBA Draft. To start the day off, they pulled off a steal of a trade as they acquired Aaron Afflalo for Evan Fournier and a pick. Later on the in day, things got even better. With the 11th pick in the draft, the Nuggets selected Doug McDermott. However, he was quickly shipped off to Chicago for the 16th overall pick, and the 19th overall pick.

Soon after this, the Bulls drafted Bosnian Center Jusuf Nurkic. The pick came as a surprise because most people thought that the Nuggets would a player that would be able to help out immediately. People would soon find out that drafting Nurkic would become a great move by the Nuggets. With the 19th pick the Bulls took Gary Harris, a guy that I had been mocking to Denver with the 11th pick. Needless to say, I was ecstatic for them to grab him so late in the draft. The Nuggets scored big last night, and here’s why.

At first the Jusuf Nurkic pick looked like a major mistake. However, the trade of 11 for 16 and 19 was an amazing move for the Nuggets to make. They got the guy that they wanted all along and now a draft and stash candidate. Nurkic is just 19 years old, and is 6’11’. In his league overseas last season, he averaged 11 points per game. He is a great talent and his a big player weighing in at 280 pounds. While it appears we won’t see him for at least a few years, the Nuggets have a great project to develop in the upcoming years on top of the selection of Gary Harris.

Gary Haris has been my guy for the Nuggets all along and they got him. They got him with the 19th pick. I was shocked to see him still available when they were picking, and he is already being considered as the steal of the draft. Harris will immediately pay dividends for the Nuggets, and he will be a big part of their bench next season. Harris is the ideal two-way player the Nuggets were looking for, and he was a tremendous value pick at #19.

I was shocked to see him still available when they were picking, and he is already being considered as the steal of the draft.

Like I said before, the Nuggets had a huge draft night. They got a player who is just 19 years old playing overseas and working on his game, as well as the guy they clearly wanted all along. The Nuggets used McDermott as trade bait and it clearly worked out for them. Gary Harris is going to be a major part of the Nuggets plans next season while Jusuf Nurkic is going to be a part of the team in the future. As a fan, you have to be happy about how Tim Connelly and the Nuggets handled this years draft.
