Wilson Chandler Needs To Step Up

Wilson Chandler‘s game has been decent lately, but there could be some improvements. Wilson has shown that he can be a dominant rebounder and provide the Denver Nuggets with a good amount of points. Throughout this season, Wilson has given us some impressive highlights and some memorable throw-downs, but what can Chandler improve on?

Last night versus the Utah Jazz, Chandler finished with a measly two points. He was 1-7 from the floor and he played 25 minutes. He needs to get those numbers up. He’s not a phenomenal shooter, but that doesn’t mean he can’t overwhelm a team with a barrage of points.

Chandler is 6’8″ and he has shown that has an impressive post game. Who could forget when he posterized Tyson Chandler as they played the Dallas Mavericks on January 16th?! Also, Chandler isn’t too bad shooting the three-ball. Chandler is shooting 34-percent from the three-line this year, which isn’t the worst. If he could get that percentage up though, the Nuggets would surely benefit from that.

Chandler is a tall player and he towers over several people in the league, but he is currently averaging a measly six rebounds per-game. Chandler needs to get these numbers up. Back to last night versus the Jazz, Chandler only pulled in three boards. Those numbers have to go up. In the past five games, Chandler has only had one game where he had 10+ rebounds. This was against the Philadelphia 76ers on March 25th, when Chandler had 11 rebounds and 16 points. Also in that game, he shot 4-14 from the field. This goes back to him being an unimpressive shooter. He needs to get his field-goal percentage and his rebounds per-game up.

The best shooting nights he’s had recently goes back to when the Nuggets played the Houston Rockets. Wilson played twice recently against Houston, and he put up decent shooting numbers. The game versus Houston on March 7th, he recorded an impressive 26 points on 11-15 shooting. In the second meeting on March 19th, Wilson recorded 23 points on 10-17 shooting. Not bad shooting nights from Chandler in those games, but the Nuggets need to see more of that.

Let’s take a look at Chandler‘s month of March. He only missed one game during the month — versus the New Orleans Pelicans on the 15th. Other than that, Wilson has some pretty decent statistics this month. He averaged 13.9 points, 2.2 assists and 6.5 rebounds per-game. Chandler is only averaging 0.3 blocks per-game this month, which is unimpressive. Those numbers have to go up for sure. Chandler needs to step his defensive game up going forward for the Nuggets. His free-throw percentage is pretty good, sitting at 73.1-percent this month. Also, Wilson’s three-point percentage has been really decent this month, as he shot 43.9-percent. The Nuggets need Chandler to be more consistent with these numbers.

So, how do I personally feel about Wilson Chandler? I’m a fan. I really like the offensive energy this guy brings to the court. Despite his not so impressive numbers, he’s pretty fun to watch. He can jam the ball and hurt the rim, his three-point shot is getting there and he’s starting to look more promising. If he is to stay with this Nuggets team though, I need to see some of these numbers increase. Primarily, his rebounds and assists per-game need to go up. Also, I need to see him get more involved on defense. Other than that, I like the way this guy plays. I think as long as his numbers increase, the Nuggets should stick with him.
