The NBA held it’s annual farce known as the Draft Lottery tonight in New York prior to the Western Conference Final game between the Rockets and Warriors and predictably, the Denver Nuggets stayed where they began the proceedings getting the 7th pick in the draft to be held on June 25th.

Owner Josh Kroenke represented the Nuggets at the Lottery which was televised nationwide by ESPN.  The Nuggets only had a 4.3% for the first overall pick, 6.7% for the second and 8.4% for the third pick so the odds were stacked against them.  The first three picks went as follows:

#1 Pick:  Minnesota Timberwolves

#2 Pick:  Los Angeles Lakers

#3 Pick:  Philadelphia 76ers.

This is the third year in a row that the 76ers have had either the #1 or #2 picks in the NBA Draft and the second straight year the Timberwolves have had a top two pick.

The 7th pick in the draft has had an up and down history over the course of the last 30 years.  Below is a list of some of the good #7 picks and some of the bad ones:

The Good:

Stephan Curry, Randy Foye,Nene Hilario (Nene) Last year Nik Stauskas, Harrison Barnes, Luol Deng, Richard Hamilton, Damon Stoudamire, Kevin Johnson, Chris Mullin and Alvin Robertson.

The Bad:

Bismack Biyombo, Eddie Griffin, Chris Mihms, Tim Thomas, Bobby Hurley, Luc Longley, Tim Perry, Quintin Dailey and Mike Gminski.

So you can see that it has been a mixed bag with the 7th overall pick in prior drafts.  I think it means the Nuggets have a chance to get a very good player with the pick but they could also get another “El Busto” too.  The hope is that the Nuggets scouting staff has done their homework and know of a few players that rate very highly that they can grab with the 7th pick.  Stay with NuggLove between now and the draft on June 25th for our analysis of a number of players that could fall to the 7th spot for the Nuggets to draft.
