Will Barton will test free agency and that could actually help the Nuggets.

It is clear now that Will Barton will decline a contract extension with Denver and opt to test the free agent waters. With this in mind, Nugget fans do not need to panic. In all actuality, this could actually better the team in the long run.

Barton was far too inconsistent this season and it hurt the Nuggets. A couple of those games would have been the difference between barely missing the playoffs or making the post season. Instead, we Nugget fans know what our fate was and it still hurts to this day.

More from Nugg Love

While he is an electric scorer when he gets hot, he can be too one dimensional at times and is really a poor man’s J.R. Smith. Sure, he is fun to watch he is on fire. But, when he isn’t hitting his shots and continues to play hero ball? Then it is just maddening. Before I go any further, let make one thing clear. Just because a player is testing free agency does NOT mean he is leaving his team. This is a practice that has become quite common in recent years. Keep in mind Carmelo Anthony tested free agency to see what suitors were out there and he still returned to New York. So for you Will Barton fans out there, there is still hope, so have faith.

Barton is a great offensive player, but his defense remains in question. As I have stated many times, this team has enough offensive firepower already, they need some defenders. If Barton were to leave, this would generate even more cap space for the Nuggets giving them the opportunity to pursue a quality free agent.

Not to mention, the clog at the shooting guard spot would finally be resolved. Murray could get more time and Harris would finally be solidified as the two guard of the future. Barton leaving would also open up an opportunity for Malik Beasley to get some much deserved minutes. With the possibility of Barton leaving Denver, Nuggets fans should not fret.
