When I was covering a few of Pitt’s games earlier in the season, I noticed a familiar face at one of them. Before the game, I left my seat in press row to talk to this individual to confirm that it was him. Without saying any names, it just so happened to be a high ranking Denver Nuggets official.

We started talking and he asked who I wrote for. Once I told him about my site, I also told him that I was going to be covering the Nuggets for FanSided. The journalist in me had to ask him who he was here to see. Without giving me a direct answer, he said, “Oh I think you can take a guess.” While saying that to me, he looked right at the 7-foot New Zealand native Steven Adams.

Jan 5, 2013; Piscataway, NJ, USA; Pittsburgh Panthers center Steven Adams (13) dunks during the second half against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.
Adams, who is a freshman at Pitt, is considered by many to be a possible one-and-done for Jamie Dixon’s Panthers. Adams didn’t perform well in the contest against Detroit as he only had two points and three rebounds in 12 minutes. Nevertheless, the interest is there from the Nuggets.

On the season, Adams is averaging 6.9 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.7 blocks in 22 minutes per game for the Panthers. If Adams is able to improve his play during Big East play, then the Nuggets could take a chance on him in the upcoming NBA Draft.

The Nuggets currently have Timofey Mozgov (2.8 points, 3.1 rebounds), Kosta Koufos (7.7 points, 6.5 rebounds) and Javale McGee (10.6 points, 5.5 rebounds) anchoring the middle. While I’m in favor of McGee getting the majority of the minutes out of the trio, Coach George Karl has gone with Koufos.

Looking at the Nuggets lineup and barring a trade for DeMarcus Cousins or Anderson Varejao (the latter which would make rebounding against the Nuggets impossible), the center position is where they are vulnerable. While the 19-year-old Adams would be a project, you can’t teach height or athleticism – both which Adams has plenty of.

A couple years on the bench learning the position behind McGee would be beneficial for the Nuggets and Adams alike.

Can we say steal of the draft?

Quincy Miller was a guy that the Denver Nuggets really liked going into the draft and one that they were considering to take with the 20th pick. No doubt they are happy that he fell to them with the 38th pick.

Miller, who is only 19 years old, is one of the most talented players in the draft. He made our list as one of the top sleepers in the draft and one of the best fits for the Nuggets. He also won over Ty Lawson at his workout in Denver. He was 20th on our big board (Evan Fournier was 24th).

Like Fournier, Miller won’t make an impact on the Nuggets roster this year. Miller, who was a one and done player, is still a year or two away from playing in the NBA and many believe he is still recovering from his ACL injury in high school. Despite the injury he averaged 10.6 points and 5.0 rebounds a game for the Bears. If he stayed in college many believe he would be a top-10 pick next year.

His best game in college was during a one-point loss to then No. 5 Missouri. Miller went for 29 points on 12 of 17 shootings. It’s fair to say he has more upside than both Perry Jones and Quincy Acy – two former teammates that were drafted above him.

Some scouts have compared him to a poor man’s Kevin Durant, others have said he is similar to Detroit Pistons’ Austin Daye. He has similar stature to both players, he was listed at 6-foot-10, 219 pounds at the Draft Combine. He also had a 7-1 wingspan and a 36 inch vertical leap.

Miller will likely play on the Nuggets’ Summer League team and will also probably see time in the NBDL. He’ll have to really wow Denver’s coaches during training camp to get playing time. He is currently fourth on Denver’s depth chart, behind Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler and Corey Brewer.
