Will the real Denver Nuggets please stand up?

Did the Nuggets overachieve when they beat the San Antonio Spurs, Orlando Magic, Philadelphia 76ers and Chicago Bulls on the road? Or did they underachieve when they lost to the New Orleans Hornets and Toronto Raptors on the road? That is a perplexing question, one that may not be completely answered this season.

After beating the Orlando Magic on Sunday and with two days of rest the Nuggets should just breeze to an easy win against the lowly Hornets. However, with a young squad, there will be growing pains – especially when a team like New Orleans gets two of their better players (Eric Gordon and Carl Landry) back from injuries. (more…)

While the world was stuck waiting around for another Celtics-Lakers NBA Finals, some future NBA stars were trying to impress scouts at the Draft Combine. And a few helped their stocks and others didn’t so much and you can be sure that the Nuggets hire ups were watching.

Couple players worth mentioning are Trevor Booker, Willie Warren, Greivis Vasquez, Jon Scheyer and Jarvis Varnado.

BOOKER- This former Syracuse star was considered a mid second rounder, but with some of the recent workouts Booker may have edged his way into the first round. Originally he was getting comparisons too Brandon Bass, but after a few workouts he is looking to become another Jason Maxiell. Booker was listed just a little taller than 6-foot-7 and 236 pounds. He also was one of the quicker big man in the lane agility drill, only Patrick Patterson was quicker. Booker’s 8-10 standing reach surprised many at the workout and he benched pressed 185 pounds 22 times, second most at the workout (only Luke Harangody benched more). Booker may not be a star at the next level, his intensity, defense and rebounds should help an NBA team and especially playoff teams.

WARREN - Reports out of Oklahoma aren’t great, questioning his attitude and maturity. However, Warren’s physique is unbelievable. Six-foot-four and 208 pounds, with very little body fat Warren can take most guards into the paint, a la Rodney Stuckey. However, he was surprising in the shooting drill. He was one of only four players that made more than 75 percent of their shots and he was the most surprising of the bunch. He is now getting comparisons to Ben Gordon and those aren’t far fetched. Warren could potentially be a star in the League or he could go in the ways of JR Rider or Omar Cook.

VASQUEZ- It is still hard to believe that the Player of the Year in the ACC isn’t a guaranteed first round draft pick. Vasquez has the confidence to play in League and can either play the shooting guard or point guard. His shooting and fitness should alone get him a spot in the NBA, but his basketball IQ can help most team. He could be a smarter version of Sasha Vujacic and the Nuggets could definitely use that.

SCHEYER - This former Blue Devil wasn’t lights out as he should have been at the workout and there are still doubts he will make in the NBA. But Scheyer was a lot bigger than many projected. He was listed at 6-6 and could be an close comparison to Matt Carroll.

VARNADO - He went into the Draft Columbine on the verge of being a first round pick, but his size and strength at the Columbine really hurt. Teams could deal with him weighing 210 pounds, but he barely pushed the 185-pound bench press only three times. Xavier’s guard Jordan Crawford benched the bar seven times alone.
