Considering that the NBA Lockout isn’t making much progress some loyal basketball fans have turned their attention to the college ranks to get satisfy their basketball taste.

Players like Anthony Davis, Jared Sullinger, Harrison Barnes, Jeremy Lamb and John Henson stood out during the opening day of the college games. And currently NBADraft.net has the Nuggets selecting Henson with their first pick in the draft.

Henson is an intriguing prospect and it is easy to see that he’d be a player that George Karl would like. For one, he is a playing for Karl’s alum North Carolina. He is also a defensive-first player and quite versatile – with the size, athleticism and length to play both small forward and power forward in the NBA.

Against Michigan State, Henson totaled 12 points, seven rebounds and career-best nine blocks. He has been compared to both Andrei Kirilenko and Hakim Warrick due to his length and athleticism, which allows him to make a major impact on the defensive side of the ball.

Sullinger, however, would be the ideal fit for the Nuggets, who lack a consistent scorer in the post. Sullinger, who is a throwback player, led Ohio State with 19 points and nine rebounds. He lacks great athleticism, but is very skilled in the post and has monster size (6-foot-9, 281 pounds). But as of right now, Sullinger is projected to be a top-five pick, along with Barnes, Davis, Andre Drummond and James McAdoo. Drummond (zero points, 4 rebounds and 1 block) and McAdoo (4 points, 3 rebounds) weren’t overly impressive in their college debuts.

The draft will be loaded with talented swingman, led by Doc Rivers’ stud son, Austin Rivers. Rivers scored 16 points, with a wide variety of impressive moves. Scoring by driving to the basket, in transition and also from behind the arc. Lamb continues to impress scouts. He scored a career-high 30 points, he hit five treys and picked up four steals. Lamb’s 7-foot-1 wingspan may be more impressive.

Michael Gilchrist also played well in his debut for Kentucky. He finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and with a pair of steals and blocks. Gilchrist has great work ethic and character to go along with his athleticism, which makes him a sleeper in the draft – especially if he falls to the later round of the draft.

Denver Nuggets backup center Johan Petro, aka Frenchy, has signed a 3-year, $10 million deal with the New Jersey Nets, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of YahooSports.

Petro was with the Nuggets the previous two seasons and played in 36 games for the Nuggets last season and averaged 3.4 points and 3.1 rebounds, he also started 16 games.

While he wasn’t bad, he isn’t irreplaceable. The 24-year-old center was long and solid rebounder, but struggled with foul trouble and intensity to get regular minutes. However, he did play well in spurts. Back in February he held his own against Dirk Nowitzki, hitting all five of his shots and scoring 13 points in 22 minutes. He also helped limit Nowitzki to 5-17 shootings.

He wasn’t likely to resign with the Nuggets, because he wanted a multi-year deal which the Nuggets were reluctant to give him.

The Nuggets are rumored to be in talks with former Monarch High School star Louis Amundson and veteran center Brad Miller, but the free agency field is getting glum and it has been hard for the Nuggets to make a move with the amount opposing teams are paying some subpar stars. Below are some of the few ridiculous contracts teams have offered and the age the players will be when their contract is up:

Channing Frye (Phoenix), $30 million for 5 years, 32 years old

Drew Gooden (Milwaukee), $32 million for 5 years, 34 years old

Brendan Haywood (Dallas), $55 million for 6 years, 37 years old

Amir Johnson (Toronto), $34 million for 5 years, 28 years old

David Lee (Golden State), $80 million for 6 years, 33 years old

Darko Milicic (Minnesota), $20 million for 4 years, 29 years old

Travis Outlaw (New Jersey), $35 million for 5 years, 31 years old

Amar’e Stoudemire (New York), $96 million for 5 years, 33 years old

Hakim Warrick (Phoenix), $18 million for 4 years, 32 years old

The frustrating thing is that how many of them could have signed for less money, but they weren’t? And how many of them are going to help their teams win? Frye can shoot, but doesn’t bring much else. Haywood helps, but he has never played 30 minutes a game. Gooden has a good game every once in a while, but no way is he that valuable. Johnson is all potential. Lee could be the steal of the signing, but can how does he really fit in with Golden State? Milicic might be okay, but isn’t worth $5 million a year. Outlaw could be a great player, but he could have been signed cheaper. Stoudemire doesn’t defend and has one good eye and one bad knee. Warrick is an undersized power forward, who should be paying the Suns to run with Steve Nash.
