Ranking The 10 Worst Teams In Denver Nuggets History
By Eric Meyer
6. 1991-1992 Denver Nuggets:
24-58 — 4th place in the Midwest Division.
This team was coached by the notorious “Mad Scientist” Paul Westhead and they were a team that couldn’t score or play much defense, even with the venerable Dikembe Mutombo in the middle and sharp-shooting rookie point guard Chris Jackson (Mahmoud Abdul Rauf) knocking down shots from all over the court. It was Westhead’s second (and last) season as head coach and he had completely changed his style of play from the 1990-12991 season. in Westhead’s first year as coach, he brought the frenetic pace he used with much success at Loyola Marymount for several years. This team looked much, much different from Westhead’s first Nuggets squad. Granted, the slower pace did garner the Nuggets four more wins than the year before, but it was still some of the worst basketball that was ever played at the old McNichols Arena. Some notable names on this roster were also part of the 1994 team that stunned the world with their series victory over the Supersonics — Mutombo, Jackson (Rauf), and Reggie Williams. They also had NBA legend Walter Davis on the roster, which gave fans something to look forward to, but the roster also included NBA cast-offs like Scott Hastings, Greg ‘Cadillac’ Anderson, Winston Garland and Todd Lichti. The Nuggets and their fans could not see much success on the horizon with the way the 1991-1992 season went.
1991-1992 Statistical Leaders:
Scoring: Davis 22.2 ppg; Rebounding: Anderson 12.1 rpg; Assists: Garland 6.7 apg; Blocks: Mutombo 2.8 bpg
