Ranking The 10 Worst Teams In Denver Nuggets History
By Eric Meyer
2. 1998-1999 Denver Nuggets:
14-36 (in a strike shortened season) — 6th place in the Midwest Division.
This team (coached by Italian League legend Mike D’Antoni) had a few good NBA caliber players on it, but it never helped them win a lot of games. This team included Nick ‘The Quick’ Van Exel, a young and not yet ready for prime-time Chauncey Billups, Antonio McDyess and Raef LaFrentz. They averaged only 93.5 points per-game (ninth in the NBA), but gave up 100.1, which was bad enough for 28th out of the 29 teams in the NBA. McDyess was becoming a bonafide NBA star as he averaged a double-double on the season, with 19.7 points and 10.0 rebounds per-game, but he was virtually the only reason to watch this team. The rest of the roster included a cast of characters that could only be described as “extra” — legends like Cory Alexander, Johnny Taylor, Danny Fortson and Keon Clark. The only saving grace for this horrifyingly bad season was that they played only 50 games due to the protracted strike that caused the season to be trimmed and still include the Playoffs.
1998-1999 Statistical Leaders:
Scoring: McDyess 21.2 ppg; Rebounding: Fortson 14.8 rpg; Assists: Van Exel 7.4 apg; Blocks: McDyess 2.1 bpg
