Michael Malone’s Offense is Convincing, But Has Inconsistencies:
Malone’s fast-paced-but-defensive style has translated to the court well in the early stages of the season. The Nuggets are posting impressive defensive stats for their current squad, and are attempting more fast breaks and quicker offensive sets overall.
In their five wins, their offense was smooth and accentuated the strong points: Mudiay running the offense, Faried’s power and athleticism and Gallinari’s shooting. But in their losses, the Nuggets seemed devoid of direction and practice. As the season progresses and the young core becomes more familiarized with Malone’s coaching strategy and each other, there will be fewer irregularities in the offense.
He has had a clear temper when things have gone awry in games, and it think that type of reaction and discipline is important, especially with such young talent. His passing offense benefits big/guard chemistry building and promotes wings to take shots. As the season progresses, he needs to allow playmakers to control the tempo more often, and make sure Mudiay doesn’t keep the ball in his hands for too long.
