According to a report released today by Sean Deveney of Sportingnews.com, the Denver Nuggets are engaged in trade talks with the Minnesota Timberwolves centered on Nuggets big man Kenneth Faried.
Details on what Minnesota would send back as part of any potential deal are unclear, as is the seriousness of the discussions. The report also indicated that the Nuggets are one of the teams “most likely to pull off a deal” between now and the draft, which is under 24 hours away.
The Timberwolves hold the 5th overall pick in tomorrow’s NBA draft, but any chance of the Nuggets acquiring the pick would be unlikely with just Kenneth Faried being the focal point of the package to Minnesota. A more likely scenario would be if Denver packaged the 7th overall pick with Faried, for the 5th and a filler.
Minnesota currently has an embarrassment of riches in terms of young talent on its roster, many of which the Nuggets could covet in return for Faried. Zach Lavine is a tantalizing prospect with his incredible athleticism and length in the back court. The two-time Slam Dunk champion would be a great fit coming off the Nuggets bench.
With tomorrow’s draft featuring such high level talent at both guard positions, with Kris Dunn, Jamal Murray and Buddy Hield all expected to go high, the Timberwolves could afford to deal Lavine for Faried, while using its pick tomorrow to draft another highly talented guard.
Andrew Wiggins is another young talent the Nuggets would love to get their hands on, but a deal involving him seems unlikely. Wiggins, the 1st overall pick just two years ago would be an exceptional fit in Denver, as his sometimes explosive scoring was something that the Nuggets lacked last season. Denver would have to expand on any deal involving Wiggins to make it plausible. This is practically impossible for Denver though.
Other potential young talent on the Timberwolves roster who the Nuggets could covet include Gorgui Dieng, Tyus Jones, Shabazz Muhammed and Nemanja Bjelica. Of those names, Tyus Jones might be the most plausible if packaged with another veteran like Tayshaun Prince.
On the flipside for Minnesota, recently hired head coach, Tom Thibodeau, has a connection with Kenneth Faried. Both were members of the US National team that won the gold medal at the FIBA World Cup in 2014. Faried was one of USA’s better players throughout that tournament.
With the NBA draft under 24 hours away, look for plenty more rumors to surface involving our Denver Nuggets as our plethora of picks and veterans make an enticing combination for other NBA teams.
