Starting with Naismith Prep Player of the Year and McDonald’s All-American MVP in 1988, Mourning it seems was always destined for greatness.

His career at Georgetown progressed such that he was named Big East player of the Year in 1992 and first-team All-American that same year.

He was the 2nd overall pick in the 1992 NBA draft, going to the Charlotte Hornets. He played out his rookie contract and after rejecting an offer from the Hornets was traded, in 1995, to the Miami Heat.

from ’95 to ’02, Alonzo earned Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) honors twice, was selected to the All-Defensive first team and led the NBA in blocks (’99-2000).

He is a 7-time all-star and won a Championship in 2006 with the Heat.  He earned 2 Olympic Gold Medals (’94, ’00).

His 2.81 career blocks per game average is still good for 6th on the all-time NBA list, ahead of fellow Georgetown alum and shot-blocking legend Dikembe Mutombo.
