On this week’s Huff’s hot take, I discuss the Denver Nuggets’, Trey Lyles.

The Denver Nuggets got a serviceable back up power forward in Trey Lyles during last summer’s NBA Draft.

While many were upset about the Nuggets drafting Donovan Mitchell for the Jazz, many forget Lyles had his best season of his short career. When Paul Millsap went down, the Nuggets had to look to other options.

One of which was the young Trey Lyles. Lyles averaged a career high in points per game and was the X factor in some of Denver’s key wins. With that being said, what can we expect from the former Utah Jazz power forward next season?

Well, on this week’s hot take, I am going to predict Lyles will be in the running for one of next year’s awards, Most Improved Player of the Year. If this season’s improvements are any indication, then the future is extremely bright for Trey Lyles.

If this same trajectory translates to next season, he will have a great shot at winning this award. Not a bad title for one of youngest players in our core who has some overlooked potential.

Actually winning the award may be a bit of a stretch. Nevertheless, being in the running is not out of question. He can stretch the floor, improved his defense and is an underrated passer. A great back up power forward for Paul Millsap who could also fit well with Nikola Jokic in the future. A future which may lack Paul Millsap and will have Trey taking over the starting four position.

The Nuggets did not get Donovan Mitchell, which fans need to seriously get over. However, they did get a bit of a steal by letting Trey Lyles have more of an opportunity in the Mile High City.
