Find small forward depth via free agency

The Denver Nuggets enter the 2018/2019 campaign with three pure small forwards on their roster. Their most likely start Wilson Chandler who opted into his player option for this season. Rookie phenom Michael Porter Jr. who may not play this season due to precautionary reasons. Other than that, the Nuggets do not have a true small forward on their roster.

The Denver Nuggets need some depth to add to that position. Wilson Chandler is not the most durable player in the NBA and Porter Jr. may not play at all. Last year, the Nuggets played Will Barton at the three, but with Denver’s cap issues and Barton’s desire for a max deal, Barton probably won’t return.

Look for Denver to analyze the free agent market for back-up caliber small forwards. A couple that come to mind are Rodney Hood who is looking to assume a larger role after a tough NBA Finals. Doug McDermott, a proven scorer who could provide a large spark for the second unit. Finally, Trevor Ariza who is known as a 3 and D wing, who might be looking for a different role from his in Houston.

All of these signings are most likely contingent on a couple of things. First they must gain additional cap space by unloading a contract or two. Then, the players listed above obviously cannot re-sign with their current team.

Hopefully Denver can pull off a few moves over the next few weeks. If so, they will be in the best possible spot to compete for a playoff spot next year.
