The Denver Nuggets signed Vlatko Cancar this offseason with the hope that the versatile forward, who was drafted in 2017, will be able to contribute at some point this season. Cancar has spent this offseason preparing for NBA basketball and recently did an interview with Eric Spyropoulos of NBA.com detailing what he has been up to this summer.
Cancar made no mistake in identifying the speed of the NBA game as the aspect he is working on the most at this time. “I’m trying to get the system of the NBA as fast as possible….Here the game is quicker, every decision has to be faster, so this is a big transition from Europe to the NBA.”
This is a normal adjustment for any international prospect getting ready for NBA basketball but Cancar will be helped along by the fact that he is a high-IQ player. “I’m not a spectacular, flashy player. I’ll be the player that gets the job done and helps the team be in the best position it can be.” In four games in the Las Vegas Summer League, Cancar averaged 8.7 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.
Cancar has high expectations for the 2019-20 season despite being a rookie adjusting to a new environment and with the volatility of Denver’s wing rotation, there is no telling when Cancar could be needed in a larger capacity.
But he isn’t rushing things, instead, taking a day-by-day approach as he works towards cracking the rotation this season. “For the team, I think we should have the same mentality. Take it game-by-game. We first have to get together and of course hope there are no injuries. Like I said, through time the (complete) picture will be shown.”
