The Nuggets seemed to get a potential steal in last year’s draft, when they snagged Oregon’s Bol Bol in the second round.

Bol was originally expected to be a lottery pick, and potentially even one of the first five names called by NBA commissioner Adam Silver on draft night. Bol towers at 7”2, and remains only 20 years old as a player undergoing a turbulent rookie season.

Bol was an under-the-radar star in college, averaging 21 points and ten rebounds per game. However, the sample size teams and scouts had to work with was very small, as he played in just nine games with the Ducks. Similarly to Michael Porter Jr., Bol was brought in to be a long term project for a team already rich in talent up and down the depth chart.

Bol eventually was sent down to the G-League where he recorded a strong performance over the Fort Wayne Mad Ants while on a two-way contract with the team. Bol recorded 16 points and 11 rebounds in that game before being recalled back to the team on November 24th. Bol was a finalist to make the roster for the 2017 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup, representing the United States, but was ultimately cut.

While he has barely been mentioned since arriving in Denver after a draft-day trade with the Miami Heat, Bol might have himself a future in Denver. Both Mason Plumlee and Paul Millsap are scheduled to hit free agency after the season, leaving a bit of a hole in the depth chart in Denver’s front court.

Bol also has one of the best centers in the league to be groomed by in Nikola Jokic. Bol’s natural talent and youth make him a low risk, high reward prospect who can be developed by a coaching staff that has been as successful at bringing along young players as anyone in the game. The Nuggets might have struck gold late in the draft thanks to a strong second round draft pick.
