The Denver Nuggets need to consider drafting a point guard in the 2020 NBA Draft.

One of the ways that the Denver Nuggets could play to their full potential is by shuffling their starting lineup and injecting new blood into it. While they could always trade or sign such a player, the 2020 NBA Draft will be a way to add young and inexpensive talent to their youthful core.

While 3-point shooters and athletic forwards may be on the top of Denver’s big board, there’s a need to consider drafting a point guard with the first round pick owed to them by the Houston Rockets because it seems that there needs to be a shift in the backcourt.

Not only will moving rising star Jamal Murray back to shooting guard help him find consistency in his 3-point shot by getting him more off-ball opportunities but it will allow them to improve their defensive impact at one of the toughest positions to guard. Demoting Gary Harris, who is oft-injured and who has seemed to take a step backwards as a scorer, is another benefit of this move.

Whether the Nuggets trade for this player, sign him in the upcoming free agency period or draft him may not make too much of a difference. However, there are drawbacks to each option.

Trading for a starting level point guard may require Denver to part with a player they would rather keep. If this player comes through free agency, Denver’s is unlikely to have the type of cap room needed to sign a top-tier point guard. When it comes to drafting a point guard, there’s the obvious uncertainty a rookie point guard drafted late in the first round would be able to make a high impact on a contending team.

Still, there are players that the Nuggets could target at the bottom of the first round (with the first round pick that the Houston Rockets owe them) that could be steals, helping Denver become a team that consistently makes deep runs into the NBA playoffs.
