The Denver Nuggets are bringing back rookie power forward Tyler Cook.

According to The Athletic’s Mike Vorkunov, the Denver Nuggets will sign 22-year-old power forward Tyler Cook to a two-way contract after promoting point guard P.J. Dozier’s two-way contract to a standard deal. An undrafted rookie who played at Iowa for three seasons, the Nuggets had originally signed Cook to a two-way contract in the 2019 offseason but waived him shortly before the 2019-20 season.

Cook was picked up by the Cleveland Cavaliers soon thereafter, although he would be waived by Cleveland in January.

Considered a strong and athletic power forward who’s a good finisher at 6’8″ and 240 pounds, Cook averaged 12.9 points and 5.7 rebounds in 21.3 minutes per game in the 29 contests he played for the NBA G League this season. He only played 11 games with the Cavaliers but only in a bit role, never playing more than 5 minutes in a game.

With two forwards whose durability isn’t ideal in Michael Porter Jr. and Paul Millsap, Cook gives the Nuggets additional depth at power forward but he’s not going to provide what either Porter or Millsap to the table as far as shooters. While both Porter and Millsap shot above 40% from 3-point range this season, Cook went 0-5 from deep in the G League and 3-21 from long-distance in college.

Additionally, although Cook has the size and athleticism to guard all three frontcourt positions, he’s inconsistent on that end.

What Cook will be able to do well is make plays in transition and to play off of the team’s ball-handlers.

Barring any changes, the Nuggets’ roster for the remainder of the 2019-20 season is set as all of the roster spots are filled. The question is if it will be enough for them to make a deep run in the 2020 NBA Playoffs.
