Denver Nuggets: 3 affordable wings to target in free agency
Wesley Matthews
Wesley Matthews was once seen as one of the best starters in the league thanks to his 3-point prowess and defensive ability. He’s still a quality player on both ends of the floor but his role has was significantly reduced this season. Despite him remaining a full-time starter, he’s averaging 24.7 minutes per game for the Milwaukee Bucks this season, tied for a career-low.
Still, the Nuggets could use a player with his experience, perimeter shooting and smart defensive play. Matthews, who can also put the ball on the floor, and he’s a strong finisher around the rim. NBA Advanced Stats has him shooting 62.9% on shots within the restricted area this season, while Basketball Reference has him shooting 69.1% on shots within three feet of the rim.
His ability to accept a reduced role with a legitimate contender is also a promising sign, as it shows that he’s not a player that will let his ego get in the way. Ultimately, Mathews could provide valuable depth for Denver, as he’d be able to play both spots on the wing. Should the two parties click well enough, Matthews could even incentivize the Nuggets to try to move shooting guard Gary Harris in an effort to free up cap space.
Matthews, a 33-year-old 10-year veteran, has averaged 7.5 points while shooting 39.7% from the field and 36.5% from three.
