Report: 2020 NBA Draft may be moved back to Nov. 18
The 2020 NBA Draft will be moved back again, which actually bodes well for the Denver Nuggets.
Just a day after The Athletic and Stadium’s Shams Charania reported that the NBA had agreed to move the 2020 NBA Draft back from Oct. 16 (after it was originally scheduled for Jun. 25), ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski has reported that the 2020 NBA Draft is likely to be moved to Nov. 18. The league’s governors and general managers will meet to discuss the possibility on Thursday and Friday, respectively.
While free agency wasn’t mentioned in the memo, Wojnarowski notes that it’ll likely occur shortly after the draft. This makes sense as Woj also mentions that “the delay would allow the league and union to negotiate amendments to the collective bargaining agreement and agree on 2020-21 salary cap and luxury tax thresholds.”
For the Denver Nuggets, who have a first-round pick in the 2020 NBA Draft and multiple rotation players who will become free agents this offseason, clarity about a target date for key points in free agency only helps them. While they’ll get more time to scout an area of the draft that may present them with diamond in the rough prospects, they’ll get a greater perspective on what they’re willing to spend on their impending free agents and draft pick(s).
A disappointing bit of information from Wojnarowski is that the league and Player’s Association “will need to negotiate a new starting date to the season, pushing it back from Dec. 1 based on the latest information on the coronavirus pandemic.”
This may result in the 2020-21 season not starting until 2021.
