Jamal Murray wants everyone to put some respect on the Denver Nuggets’ name.

Following the Denver Nuggets’ thumping of the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals, Nuggets rising star Jamal Murray took the opportunity to decry the national media’s resistance to taking them seriously.

In his postgame presser, Murray rattled off a few prominent names, saying that it’s time for them to “start changing the narrative” and look at Denver’s team “in a better light.”

"“You got Shaq, you got Charles (Barkley), you got Zach Lowe, Stephen A. (Smith). All ya’ll better start giving this team some damn respect because we put in the work and we’ve got a resilient team.”"

In all fairness to Stephen A. Smith, although incredulous at the Clippers’ loss in Game 7, he did give the Nuggets’ their respect immediately after Game 7’s conclusion.

However, Murray makes a fair point all the same, as Denver appeared to be written off before the season ever started. ESPN had 19 of their staff members predict how the series would play out prior to Game 1 and none of them said that the Nuggets would take the series to seven games, let alone defeat the Clippers. After Denver’s fatigue caused them to drop Game 1 to LA, just about everyone had written the Nuggets off.

When they went down 3-1? It appeared as if only Nuggets fans had any belief that they could make a comeback.

A fact that the Nuggets were well aware of.

As Nuggets star center Nikola Jokic said, “Nobody wants us here. Nobody thinks we can do something. We prove ourselves and proved everybody we can do something” (per ESPN’s Royce Young).

After becoming the first team to come back from down 3-1 twice in the same postseason, nobody should count out Denver. Murray has proven he can be a supernova scorer. Jokic has proven he’s one of the smartest and most highly skilled players in the game. The players around them have shown themselves to be resilient, talented and confident in their abilities.

Yeah, facing LeBron James, Anthony Davis and the Los Angeles Lakers will be a tall task. Yet, it shouldn’t be a foregone conclusion that the Lakers will be the one in the NBA Finals this year.
