How to navigate the Nuggets’ 2020 draft and free agency
Replacing Craig and Plumlee
Craig and Plumlee have similar roles for Denver in that they’re both valued for the defense that they can bring. Neither played particularly well in the team’s postseason run but that’s not the only reason why I believe the team should let them walk.
In the case of Craig (who’s a restricted free agent), it’s because I think the Nuggets should look for a better rebounder, more reliable defender and more consistent shooter on the wing. In free agency, a player like James Ennis would be an upgrade over Craig but if they choose to replace Craig through the draft, there are options there as well.
As far as Plumlee, the problem is that his replacement is already on the roster in Bol Bol. Bol can be the league’s next unicorn, as he’s 7’2″ but can run the court like a wing and has the guard skills of a player that’s a foot shorter.
He’s shown, in limited playing time, his potential as a shot-blocker, passer, scorer and ball-handler, which leads me to believe that it’s time to let him off his leash. Adding muscle to his upper and lower body to improve his functional strength will help him on both ends but even without it, Bol can be a valuable piece for the second unit. Especially in whatever minutes he plays with Monte Morris.
