Why Lance Stephenson doesn’t fit with the Denver Nuggets: Front office history
As seen in the past, the Nuggets front office and staff are particular and detailed when selecting or signing a player to the team. It’s the reason Denver has been such a successful evaluating talent in the draft. They can be proud to say they have built a team through strategy and scouting instead of location like big market NBA teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat.
Lance Stephenson is not one of the players that would come to mind when I think of our recent draft years and signings. There is no desperate need for Stephenson at this time, and it would be a puzzling move for the front office unless he took a veteran minimum contract.
Overpaying him is the last thing the Nuggets need for the future because they will need to be resigning players such as MPJ and Aaron Gordon.
This situation reminds me of the signing of Nick Young. Different player, but it was a veteran (Laker) that we did sign and use. The reason behind both of these players is different.
During the 2018-2019 season, the Nuggets were battling the injury bug and lacked winning energy during the dog days of the regular season. Nick Young was signed on 10 Dec. 2018, and helped provide a spark in the middle of the season and kept the Nuggets afloat to make the playoffs.
Our situation with Stephenson is not the same as in 2018; we are in the offseason while the Nuggets’ health isn’t a factor currently as they rest after a long year of dealing with COVID-19.
Stephenson’s game hasn’t been proven lately at the highest level, and while the Nuggets did have an interest in attending his workout, they should question if he truly does bring any upside to this team.
