The Denver Nuggets’ new city edition jerseys are kinda terrible
By Sam LaFrance
Each NBA season, all 30 franchises release alternate uniforms called “Nike NBA City Edition uniforms.” The alternates represent “the stories, history and heritage that make each franchise unique – honoring the inherent bond between, court, community and culture.” On Sunday, a leak of what the Denver Nuggets’ new city edition will look like surfaced online.
The jerseys will be black with red trim around the neck. They’ll feature the signature rocky mountains design across the front in navy blue, with a yellow “5,280” overlapping. Each player’s jersey number will be featured on the left chest part of the top.
Why the new Denver Nuggets city edition is kinda terrible
Personally, I’ve been out on the city edition jerseys for quite some time. The idea is a creative way to entice fans to buy new merchandise each season, even if they may already have their favorite player’s jersey.
When the concept first debuted in the 2017-18 season, a lot of designs were clean and interesting. However, the more times that designers are forced to pump out new ideas year after year, the whole thing gets more stale.
The new Nuggets jersey falls victim to this. In years past, Denver has had some cool concepts. Last season’s mile-high jersey was cool, as was the rainbow feature from a few seasons ago. Now, the team is stuck with this weird mix of colors and boring design.
Not to mention how strange it is to include a number on a sports jersey that has nothing to do with the player’s number. I get it, it’s a way to call out the Mile-High City, but no one asked for it.
Nuggets fans on Reddit were none-too-pleased with the drop. User “ShowdownValue” commented on a leak of the city edition and said, “How do professionals come up with this? And then other professionals sign off on it? Seriously. Any of us could have done better.”
Other comments read, “Yikes,” “Hey, these suck,” and “Well, if these are real at least I don’t have to worry about buying a new jersey this season.”
Please, stop enabling Nike by buying new city edition jerseys each year, it’s terrible.
