The Nuggets got back in the win column on Monday night with a hard-fought 130-124 victory over the Kings in Ball Arena. Sacramento made them work, but Denver opened up a big lead early and was able to coast to the finish line.

They’re just 4-2 on the season now, but they’ve led all six games by at least 12 points at one point. Shockingly, they’re only the ninth team in NBA history to have a dozen-point lead in each of their first six games.

While that may not seem like much or anything crazy, it looks like a pretty good sign. The other eight teams to hold a 12+ point lead in their first six games have gone on to win an average of 63 regular-season games, and four of the eight teams went on to win the NBA Finals.

Past history certainly doesn’t guarantee the future, but this seems like a pretty impressive sample. It’s clear that there is a correlation between teams that hit the ground running and consistently build up big leads out of the gate, and tend to be among the best teams in the league.

Early blowouts indicate potential juggernaut

It makes sense to think that teams that can constantly build up double-digit leads would be successful. The Nuggets have an elite starting lineup, the best player in the world, and now, a very deep bench. Add in a veteran-laden cast mixed with athletic young players and a legit homecourt advantage, and there’s no reason the Nuggets can’t build on this stat.

63 wins may seem ambitious, but if Denver can stay relatively healthy, they should certainly be competitive in just about every game. If they can win a majority of their crunch-time games, while cruising to a good amount of blowouts, they should be able to finish right around 60 wins. That’s a high-end outcome, but not an unreasonable one.

But even more important than the regular season wins number is the likelihood of winning a title, and that’s what it’s all about. The idea that half of the teams in this stat have gone on to win the championship is incredibly encouraging, and the Nuggets should be right in that mix.

Even if they fall short of the absurd 63-win number, they are all-in on winning it all this year, and getting off to these early leads is clearly a nice indication of things to come.
