There was some basic level of assumption that the Nuggets and Christian Braun would get a long-term extension done before Monday’s deadline, but Jake Fischer reported on Saturday that sources are now pessimistic about any new deal.

Fischer added that the Nuggets have indicated they don’t want to pay the luxury tax next season, which would mean some major cost-cutting is coming. He also added that Braun is seeking at least $25 million a year, which is more than justified given some of the other extensions that have been handed out recently.

Braun has proven to be an excellent draft pick for Denver, contributing to the team’s championship run in 2023 as a rookie and improving each season. Last season he stepped in as a rock solid starter, putting up over 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists a night with solid defense.

He’s elite in transition and has a great relationship with Nikola Jokic. He’s a great glue-guy and does a lot of things that few other players on the roster can replicate. Losing a young player they’ve invested in would be devastating, but it appears that’s on the table.

Braun deal would make Nuggets extremely expensive

The problem seems to be the team’s unwillingness to spend. If Braun is on the books for $25+ million next season, the Nuggets will be paying around $190 million just to their five starters. That alone would put them over the tax, and it would be extremely difficult to fill out the roster without flying over the second apron.

That would also mean gutting the depth they’ve worked so hard to build up this year, and in general, likely taking a major step back during the heart of Jokic’s prime. That’s not an option, so if they are truly determined to get under the tax, they’re going to have to make tough, unpopular decisions to save money.

If Braun hits restricted free agency next season, then Denver would still be able to match any offer and keep him, but it could mean paying him even more money than expected, or risking letting him leave for nothing.

There’s no easy solution for the Nuggets other than just paying everyone and living with the tax bill. But if that’s not an option for ownership, and it doesn’t appear to be, then it means major changes are coming, and some big-money players are going to be on their way out of Denver.
