It's no secret the Nuggets have had some (a lot) of health issues this season. They've been rumored to be hitting the buyout market in search of added depth and a healthy body to fill one of the two remaining roster spots. It's the right idea, but the reality is the dream scenario of someone contributing meaningfully over the remaining two months and playoff push needs to be checked at the door.
David Adelman even hinted at it. "Who you have is your team, but I think it would be stupid not to look at some of these guys, if they do get bought out, and what they can bring into a playoff run or whatever it may be, just because of the experience part of it." Sounds like the Nuggets want veteran leadership, not court presence.
Adelman predicted that the market should heat up after the All-Star break. Nobody really knows who is going to be available yet, but the names Chris Paul, Lonzo Ball, and Chris Boucher have been mentioned as candidates. Not exactly anyone that's going to break into the current Nuggets rotation.
However, there's speculation that some other bigger-name candidates like Kevin Love, Jusuf Nurkic, and CJ McCollum could emerge. It will be interesting to see what transpires because the player gets to choose their desired destination just as much as the team that picks them up does. The Nuggets are an attractive team; they're competing for a championship this season, and Denver's a great city. That should help them land their desired target.
The Nuggets are still working on the details with Spencer Jones
Spencer Jones is likely to fill in the other remaining roster spot for the Nuggets. Jones is in the process of converting from a two-way contract to a standard contract, and Adelman confirmed that Jones agent and Denver's front office are currently working on a deal "that's fair for both sides."
The second-year wing from Stanford has been a bright spot for the injury-depleted Nuggets. Jones, who's also been bitten by the injury bug and is currently in the concussion protocol, has started 34 games this season. He's provided solid floor spacing and defense, averaging 23.6 minutes played per contest.
Jones was upgraded to questionable for the final game before the All-Star break against the Grizzlies. Adelman had hoped to have him signed before the game. Jones has become an integral part of the rotation as it becomes whole again.
