Nuggets' Cam Johnson trade looks even better after Michael Porter's latest comments

The Denver Nuggets turned Michael Porter Jr. and a 2032 first-round pick into Cam Johnson shortly after free agency officially began. It ended speculation about MPJ's future in Denver, saving the organization a good chunk of change (over $17 million) in the process. The start of next season is still a couple of months away, but it's already a trade that's aged well for the Nuggets.

Porter helped win a title in Denver, and for that, the city and fans will always appreciate him. Years down the road, when Porter is brought up, that is what fans will think about.

Now that's out of the way, MPJ's name is currently making the rounds on social media for reasons unrelated to basketball.

His comments about sports gambling are even more notable given that his brother, Jontay Porter, was banned from the NBA for "disclosing confidential information to sports bettors."

It is indeed true that leagues like the NBA partnering with gambling companies (FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetMGM) couldn't be more hypocritical. You can't watch an NBA game without seeing ads pop up on the screen or commercials about sports betting. That doesn't mean Jontay's actions were justifiable (clearly they weren't), but there is far too much overlap between the NBA and the betting realm.

MPJ trying to explain the rationale behind the decisions that his brother made was misguided. You can't help but think that the Nuggets organization is breathing a sigh of relief knowing that they don't have to worry about dealing with the backlash to what Porter said now that he's in Brooklyn.

Michael Porter Jr.'s bizarre comments make Nuggets' trade look better

Vincent Goodwill and Dan Titus discussed MPJ's comments on the podcast, "Good Word with Goodwill."

They speculated that Denver no longer having Porter in the locker room will benefit the team more than fans may think.

MPJ shouldn't be blamed for his brother's mistakes, but he put the spotlight on himself by discussing it in that manner. It raises questions about what Porter himself may be doing. You can bet that it raised eyebrows within the league office.

Porter has had his own podcast for a few years, "Curious Mike." And even if he didn't have a podcast, he understands that the words he says hold more weight because of his status as a professional athlete. Speaking publicly and dealing with the media is part of his job.

He can say whatever he wants, but some things are better off unsaid, or more specifically, some things said into a microphone are better left unsaid.
