Nuggets make stance on Christian Braun crystal clear

Denver loves Braun.

Christian Braun and Peyton Watson became eligible to sign extensions with the Denver Nuggets over the summer, but neither has signed a new contract. At media day on Monday, Ben Tenzer discussed potential contract extensions for both players, saying, "I hope they're here for a long time."

That should tell fans everything they need to know. Both are important to what the Nuggets are building, with Braun becoming a full-time starter, averaging a career-high 15.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game, shooting 58% from the field and 39.7% from three. He was rightfully in the Most Improved Player award conversation.

Braun's new deal should fall within the $25-$30 million range, with Sam Vecenie of The Athletic expecting him to sign a five-year contract in the $125-$145 million range.

Tenzer wouldn't comment directly on contract negotiations with Braun or the other eligible players, but it's clear that, based on what he said, the Nuggets value the 24-year-old. The front office is well aware of the kind of money that it will take to retain Braun, and it helps to be off the remainder of Michael Porter Jr.'s contract.

Don't expect Nuggets to let Christian Braun go anywhere

If Braun doesn't sign an extension, he'll hit restricted free agency next summer, as will Watson. That doesn't mean the Nuggets will lose Braun, as they'll be able to match any offer he gets. Don't be surprised if Braun signs a deal before then, though.

What he brings to the table is too valuable for Denver to let slip through its fingers. He's the perfect fit alongside Nikola Jokić, moving off the ball. Jokić likes Braun, too, which is all that matters at the end of the day, right? That isn't a complete joke, either. Jokić isn't going anywhere, either, so keeping players who fit around him, like Braun, is a priority.

As Tenzer said, Braun (and Watson) are due to play "huge roles" this upcoming season. Braun was a key contributor during Denver's playoff run in 2023, but his role has expanded beyond what it was then over the past year.

He's only 24, so he'll continue to get better. His three-point percentage has improved each season, but if he can get up more shots from deep and remain a threat, that'd be huge for the Nuggets.

Braun has grown into a young homegrown star, and although he's due for a big payday that will require some financial maneuvering, the front office wants him to hang around for a while. Don't we all?
