Trade #3: Nuggets add a potential star of the future
This trade may not make the Nuggets better immediately, but if the goal is truly to build a dynasty like Calvin Booth claimed, then this is the type of risk the team should take. Ivey hasn’t gotten off to a great start in his NBA career, but he was an amazing prospect and a top 5 pick in the draft just two years ago.
There’s a fairly easy argument to be made that Ivey has been horribly misused in Detroit and has inexplicably fallen out of favor in a crowded backcourt. He’s still just 22 years old and has barely gotten a chance to show his potential at the NBA level. A change of scenery could do wonders for Ivey and nobody would be shocked to see him grow into an all-star caliber player down the road.
The Nuggets have no real avenue to acquire a young star, so this might be the closest they can get. If the Pistons are ready to move on from Ivey the Nuggets should be thrilled to buy low and potentially add the piece who can bring this team into the next generation.
If the Nuggets can revive Ivey and help him reach his potential they could be adding a young star that would get this team to the dynasty status they crave. Stewart would also be an excellent young backup big man who would bring some much-needed edge and physicality. Denver would also be saving a good amount of money with this deal.
