During the NCAA Tournament Final Four, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced their 2024 class of inductees. Included in the class were two former Nuggets greats; Chauncey Billups and Walter Davis.

Billups was an all-star guard for the Nuggets in the 2000s, playing alongside Carmelo Anthony and helping Denver make a run to the Western Conference Finals. Billups is also a Denver native, who went to school in the city and played his college ball at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Davis had a long productive NBA career with the Suns before playing out the twilight of his career in Denver with the Nuggets. He helped the team make two playoff appearances in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The enshrinement was supposed to take place in mid-August, the weekend of the 16th and 17th. The event usually takes place during the summer around this time, in what’s usually a relative downtime for basketball.

But this year, the summer will be especially busy, mostly due to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. To accommodate the global basketball community, the Hall of Fame enshrinement has now been rescheduled to October 12th and 13th.

This is obviously later than usual and may have some impact on early preseason and exhibition NBA games. Billups is now the head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, so the team may have to move some things around to accommodate him.

But at the end of the day, this should be a good thing for the sport of basketball and should give the 2024 HOF class a weekend to themselves. They deserve to be honored and it would be a shame for this to become secondary to an event like the Olympics.

So now, the weekend will get started at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut on Saturday, October 12th with press conferences, autograph sessions, and an awards gala. Then on Sunday, October 13th, things will shift over to Springfield, Massachusetts, home of the Basketball Hall of Fame. That’s where the actual enshrinement ceremony will occur.
