1 dream quote we wish to hear from every Denver Nugget at media day
By Ben Handler
Calvin Booth: “I’ve been given the green light to spend”
Booth can tell us about how much he believes in the young players and how the team wants to stay flexible until he’s blue in the face, but at the end of the day, this is what fans care about. Are the owners going to foot the bill?
Because make no mistake about it, a big bill is coming. Either that or big changes are coming to the roster. Extending Murray guaranteed a massive tax bill in a couple of years. If they extend Gordon that will only make that bill go up. If they do that and keep MPJ on the roster? Well, you get where this is going.
Then there’s the matter of all of these precious young players. Assuming they actually get better as Booth expects, they are going to need to get paid as well. The goal here has been to build a dynasty and get this Nikola Jokic-led group a handful of title rings.
Realistically, that’s going to come at a very high cost. So far, we haven’t exactly seen that the Kroenke’s are willing to pay that cost. We can only hope that’s not the case and that they’ve been prudent so far because they are preparing to pay the much bigger tab in the coming years.
If Booth came out and told us that’s the case and that the team will happily spend right through the second apron to keep this train rolling, Nuggets fans will be able to sleep a lot easier the next few seasons.
