1 dream quote we wish to hear from every Denver Nugget at media day
By Ben Handler
Aaron Gordon: “I can’t wait to sign my extension”
Of the Nuggets’ key players, Gordon probably had the least dramatic offseason. But that could all change very soon. He is set to enter the final guaranteed year of his current contract, as he has a player option for next season which he is likely to decline.
Gordon is eligible for an extension starting on Friday that can pay him 140% of his current deal to tack on an extra four years. The hope is that this deal will get done with no drama or issues and Gordon will be locked up for the next five years; that’s what we hope to hear.
But there’s an alternate reality where either Gordon declines the extension or the Nuggets decide to play hardball. Either of those scenarios could make things awkward and uncomfortable during the season. It would create an unnecessary distraction and could end in a disaster.
The Nuggets just watched a situation like this play out with KCP; they didn’t extend him and then ended up losing him in free agency to a higher bidder for nothing after he declined his player option. If this plays out again with Gordon, it would be a borderline nightmare scenario for the Nuggets. They need to get this taken care of ASAP and hopefully, Gordon is on board.
