Can Denver Nuggets big man Nikola Jokic become the first player since LeBron James to win three MVP awards in four years?

Oddsmakers sure seem to think so, as Jokic is set as the -140 favorite to win the MVP award at FanDuel Sportsbook with the NBA All-Star break now behind us. Those odds give Jokic an implied probability of 58.33 percent to win the MVP this season.

A two-time MVP already, Jokic came up short last season to Joel Embiid in the MVP race, but Embiid has been eliminated from this year’s race since he’s missed too many games due to a torn meniscus.

In ESPN’s latest straw poll, Jokic is the leader in the clubhouse in the voting, with Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in second.

At BetSided, I broke down the case for Jokic to win MVP, but is he worth a bet at the current odds?

Nikola Jokic favored to win third league MVP

The fact that Jokic is already an odds on favorite at this point in the season is a great sign for his MVP chances. Jokic and the Nuggets are the No. 4 seed in the West, but the team is within striking distance of the top spot in the conference.

Finishing in the top three in the West is crucial for Jokic’s MVP agenda, as since 1983, all but two players that have won the MVP have finished in the top three in the standings in their respective conference.

Jokic and Russell Westbrook are the only two players in the last 40 years to buck that trend.

For bettors, getting Jokic at -140 may seem like a high-risk, low-reward wager, but I think it could be the best price that he’s going to be at for the rest of the season.

Denver has played just 26 of its 55 games so far this season at home, meaning the team still has 16 more home games to go to pad its record. The Nuggets also face the eighth easiest strength of schedule for the rest of the 2023-24 campaign.

Jokic is nearly averaging a triple-double on the season and is No. 1 in the league in Player Impact Estimate. The fact that he’s leading the odds and straw poll at this point season sets up perfectly for his MVP narrative to stay intact as long as Denver doesn’t falter down the stretch.
