Why the Nuggets are the biggest winners of the Russell Westbrook trade
By Ben Handler
The Nuggets and Clippers have been playing a game of chicken for weeks ever since Russell Westbrook opted into his contract and it became clear he would likely end up in Denver. But the Clippers wanted to trade Westbrook, rather than waiving him and the Nuggets wanted to sign Westbrook as a free agent.
Something had to give, but in this case, it looks like both teams may have actually won by playing the long game. On Thursday, the Clippers agreed to lump Westbrook into a deal with the Jazz for Kris Dunn - who they had already agreed to sign. That deal now becomes a sign-and-trade with Dunn still ending up in LA and Westbrook going to Utah along with a 2nd-round pick swap and cash.
The Clippers were patient and ultimately able to get off of Westbrook’s contract without much further harm done. The Jazz had cap space to burn and aren’t looking to be competitive next season, so taking on Westbrook for an asset down the road was a good piece of business.
How does this impact the Nuggets?
But here’s the kicker; the Jazz plan to immediately waive Westbrook. Russ is almost certain to clear waivers and then he’ll become a free agent where he can sign with any team. This paves the way for the Nuggets to offer Westbrook a minimum contract which should satisfy both parties and allow Westbrook to play in Denver next season.
So it appears that patience also paid off for the Nuggets as they’ll end up with their guy, but on their terms. They didn’t have to trade any assets or salary away and they’ll still end up with their veteran backup point guard on a minimum deal.
This is the best possible outcome for the Nuggets all around. Westbrook is a shell of his old self, but the Nuggets badly needed a veteran guard on the bench and Russ fits the bill. He’s still a crazy athlete and somebody who is fully capable of running the offense. He’ll bring a spark of energy and intensity that has been lacking on this team.
Even better, he’s a favorite of Nikola Jokic and somebody the Serbian MVP wanted on the team. Westbrook has had a tough time adapting to lesser roles in recent years, but if there’s anyone in the league who can get the most out of a teammate it’s the Joker. It’s not exactly a match made in heaven, but it’s a coup for the Nuggets and their bench.
