Nuggets news: DPE for Holmes, MPJ training with NBA stars, Jokic to honor Dragic
By Ben Handler
Most of the business has been conducted by the Nuggets this offseason and things have gotten pretty quiet around the team. It doesn’t seem like some blockbuster trade is on the horizon and now most fans are just waiting to hear any news about a Jamal Murray contract extension.
While that has yet to materialize, there have been some other smaller - but noteworthy - happenings around the team in recent days.
Nuggets receive Disabled Player Exception after DaRon Holmes II injury
There are really no positives from the DaRon Holmes II injury. The rookie first-round pick tore his achilles in his first Summer League action with the Nuggets and will be out for the entire season. He underwent successful surgery and is expected to be back next season, but that’s about the only good news.
The team will get a disabled player exception from the league for $1.53 million, but this isn’t much for fans to get excited about. That’s not enough money to sign a player and the team still doesn’t have an open roster spot. It’s simply a very small amount of financial relief for ownership.
Michael Porter Jr. working out with notable NBA superstars
Video surfaced of Michael Porter Jr. taking part in a pickup game with a number of NBA players including Klay Thompson and Trae Young. It’s always good to see players working on their game in the offseason and MPJ is no exception, especially after a rough ending to his 2024 playoffs.
It’s interesting the players he was with as Thompson is basically the optimal version of the movement shooter that Porter Jr. could become and someone he can hopefully learn from. Also, there have been rumors about the Nuggets acquiring a friend of Jokic and fellow Serbian Bogdan Bogdanovic. That would almost certainly require trading MPJ to the Hawks where he would team with Trae Young.
Nikola Jokic confirmed to participate in Goran Dragic’s retirement game
NBA legend, Goran Dragic is officially retiring from basketball and will have a final send-off game on August 24th in his home of Slovenia. Many former and current NBA players are slated to partake, including Nikola Jokic and Nuggets teammate and Slovenian Vlatko Cancar.
Other participants include Bogdan Bogdanovic, Chris Bosh, Dirk Nowitzki, Luka Doncic, Steve Nash, and more. This should be a fun exhibition of sorts and a well-deserved tribute to one of the all-time great European players.
