To say that expectations were low for Russell Westbrook coming into the 2024-25 NBA season would be a drastic understatement. Russ had bounced around the league for the past few seasons; the talent and athleticism were clearly still there, but repeatedly, teams were unable to utilize him in a way that positively impacted winning.

Russ became a negative asset and was unceremoniously salary dumped and waived. It got so bad, that many were left wondering if there was even a home for Westbrook in the NBA anymore. But the Nuggets badly needed cheap veteran depth help and Russ needed an employer, so the marriage of convenience was formed as he signed for a minimum contract.

But the early returns have been incredible. Russ looks like his old self, flying around on both ends, playmaking on offense, and shutting down scorers on defense. He’s been a much-needed jolt of energy and excitement for the Nuggets, filling a massive void that was left by veterans like Bruce Brown, Jeff Green, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

Westbrook’s fit with Jokic has been one of the most amazing things to watch. The two league MVPs and basketball savants have formed an instant mind-meld. Playing off of each other, they’ve become a beautiful duo to watch.

We’ve seen time and again, players having outstanding seasons with Jokic and this is the latest example as he has rejuvenated Westbrook’s career. Finally, a team and its star player are able to channel Westbrook’s talents in a positive way and the results have been incredible.

Nuggets should bet on Jokic’s ability to maximize talent

Russ was the ultimate test for Jokic and the way this has gone should send a clear message to the Denver front office. Give Jokic talent and he will maximize it. They should be eager to take on talented players who may be past their prime, miscast in their current role, needing a change of scenery, or anything similar.

If a star player, past or present, is available, the Nuggets should take a chance, bring them in, and let Jokic work his magic. For all the doubts about guys like Zach LaVine, Jimmy Butler, and even Brandon Ingram, these are amazing talents. There should be no doubt about whether or not these players will fit; Jokic will make them fit.

The Nuggets should treat this as a unique advantage and try to maximize it. Just look at Russ; he failed with multiple teams until his value was completely depleted, and he has been immediately restored in Denver. There could be a market inefficiency here for Denver to capitalize upon.

They should be actively seeking out, identifying, and targeting these kinds of players. Whether it be on the buyout market, the trade market, or even free agency this summer and beyond. There are always good players who have worn out their welcomes. Denver can act as a sort of career rehab center for these players with Jokic making it all work.

If the Nuggets are smart about this, they can use this knowledge as a sort of team-building cheat code in coming transaction cycles. Target the right players and the Nuggets roster should look a lot better than the sum of its parts.
