While the Nuggets had an excellent offseason by all accounts, one thing could have gone better and still looms over the season: Nikola Jokic remains unsigned long-term. He turned down a contract extension this summer, so he’ll go into next offseason with just one year remaining on his current deal.

But on a recent podcast, Zach Lowe of the Ringer stated something so matter-of-factly that all Nuggets fans should be thrilled and relieved. He stated that there has never even been a “whisper” about Nikola Jokic wanting to leave the Denver Nuggets.

While fans who have been paying attention may know this to be the case, it’s still something to hear it directly from a prominent, plugged-in national media member, especially someone like Lowe. Zach doesn’t peddle rumors or feed into pot-stirring narratives; he generally deals in reality.

It’s a stark contrast from many mainstream media members who like to create stories out of nothing, and will likely be dreaming up fake trades and new teams for Jokic all season, until his ink hits the paper to extend with the Nuggets. But Lowe is going in the opposite direction, squashing the rumor before it even gets started.

Nuggets have no reason to fear Jokic departure

As scary as it was to hear that Jokic was declining the extension offer from the Nuggets, it made perfect sense. He’s locked up for this season and next, with a player option for 2027-28. There’s no reason for urgency on his end, and in fact, by waiting a year, he’ll be able to sign for even more money next offseason.

All indications suggested that was the plan, and nothing has changed since then. The new front office has gone out and surrounded Jokic with more talent than he’s ever had, and they’ll have the chance to extend some other young players during the season.

They’re signaling that they’re willing to do what it takes to compete for titles for the rest of Jokic’s prime, and if things go well, there’s no reason to think signing an extension to, essentially, spend the rest of his career with the Nuggets should be nothing more than a formality.

Still, without the deal finalized, it’s going to be scary when it’s the best player in franchise history. So, every little bit of positive reassurance is going to help put fans at ease. This assessment from Lowe is a massive step in the right direction.
