Juancho Hernangomez surprised many fans last season, including me, and one key stat which how good his rookie year was is his effective field goal percentage.

Juancho Hernangomez was not exactly a “sexy,” pick for the Denver Nuggets like Jamal Murray was, or even Malik Beasley for that matter. However, he quickly proved he belonged on the Nuggets’ roster and proved many fans wrong with his efficient play and good decision making.

While he did not put up scoring numbers off the charts, Hernangomez was still an asset to the team who could not be overlooked. Golden State learned this the hard way during the regular season.

One stat of his which shows his potential is his effective field goal percentage. Effective field goal percentage is a stat which adjusts for the fact that a three point field goal is worth one more point than a two point field goal. Juancho’s percentage in this department stood at 55.4 percent.

More from Nugg Love

This is nothing to shake your head at, especially coming from a rookie. You may be shocked to hear that Hernangomez shot a remarkable 40.7 percent from down town. This percentage is almost unfathomable.  When you also take a look at his field goal percentage of 45.1 percent, it is clear why the kid had such a high effective field goal percentage.

He knows where to pick his spots and rarely forces his shots. This goes back to my point about Hernangomez being a good decision maker. If he is already demonstrating this type of basketball IQ in just his rookie year, then he will turn out to be a major steal for Denver.

He most likely will not be a starter for the Nuggets anytime soon, but one thing is abundantly clear.

Next: Denver should pursue Kyrie Irving

Juancho Hernangomez is one hell of a weapon coming off the bench for the Denver Nuggets. All stats were verified via basketball-reference.com.
