Nuggets Second Pick at #15: Juan Hernangomez, PF, Movistar Estudiantes (Spain)

Say that last name three times fast.

Juan comes from Spain where he played power forward for Movistar Estudiantes.  As a back story, I am recently returning from a couple of weeks in South America, where I figured out Movistar is a wireless company like Sprint or Verizon.  So his team name basically translates to something to the effect of Verizon Students?  I don’t get it, but whatever, that’s Europe for you.  (And they call us commercial.)

Basically what we have is here Gallo Part II.  Long armed forward that shoots around 44% from the field and excels from behind the arc.

From what I gleam from watching the tape on Juan, is that Juan has a habit of shooting from the face instead of releasing higher up in his jump shot.  It is more of a laser beam than a high arching shot that you see from a Klay Thompson.  He is going to have to spend extra time on his mechanics, because in the NBA, those shots are going to get blocked a la Mutumbo style. This isn’t the Verizon Student league anymore, Juan.

Also would like to see Juan bulk up another 15 or 20 lbs to that frame.  Sure old Stevey Hess is out there thinking the same thing.  Enjoy, Juan!
