#4: Ty Lawson

Ty Lawson was drafted 18th overall in the 2009 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, with his draft rights later being traded to the Nuggets. Lawson spent his first year serving as a backup to incumbent point guard Chauncey Billups, gaining valuable experience. When Billups was eventually traded the following season, the reigns of the team were given to Lawson.

Lawson performed very well when given the starting job. He proved to be a great scorer and facilitator, showing the ability to score by driving to the basket or hitting jumpshots. Lawson shot a very high percentage from the field and from three, becoming the face of the Nuggets franchise prior to the Carmelo Anthony trade to the Knicks.

He led the Nuggets to a franchise best record 57-25 in the 2012-13 season, giving the Nuggets the third seed in the Western Conference. Despite losing to the Warriors, Lawson led the team in scoring and assists during the series.

After the hiring of Brian Shaw in 2013-14, Lawson’s career took a turn for the worst. Lawson was able to average solid stats during the coaching turmoil, breaking Nick Van Exel‘s single season assist record in the process. Unfortunately for Lawson, he was arrested numerous times for driving under the influence, ultimately leading to the Nuggets trading him to Houston in 2015.

Despite a sour ending for Lawson, he had a very good career during his time in Denver and was one of the best point guards in franchise history.
