After the ABA and NBA merger, Thompson continued his career with the Nuggets until 1982. Thompson would make the NBA All-Star Game four different seasons.  During his time in Denver, he averaged 24.1 points, 3.4 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game. Thompson had elite athleticism that rivals many of the best to ever the sport.

Thompson had his best season in the NBA during the 1978 season. During this season, Thompson scored an astounding 73 points in the final game of the season against the Pistons. Thompson would finish second in the league in scoring that season. He also led the Nuggets to the playoffs that season where they lost to the Seattle Supersonics. This would lead to Thompson signing a record breaking contract at the time with the Nuggets.

Thompson would have an unfortunate fall from grace towards the end of his career. He was plagued by injuries and substance abuse problems that would eventually cut his career short. Despite these issues, Thompson remains the best Nuggets shooting guard of all time. Had he continued his career, he had the potential to be one of the best NBA players of all time.
