Whether he deserves to be fired or not is beside the point. If he wants to remain in Denver long term, then he must find a way to get the Nuggets to the playoffs next season. Whether the Nuggets land a star free agent or not, he has to do this in order to secure his job.
Malone was very close to getting Denver back into the post season this year, but there was still a fair share of drama to go around. Much of that drama centered Michael Malone himself. Do not forget about the story line surrounding him and Danilo Gallinari before the All-Star break. Malone had called out the team for a loss to Sacramento in which he stated there were no leaders on the team.
Gallinari disagreed and made sure to voice in another interview. This type of rift in locker rooms are what can tear a team apart and it is a miracle Denver was able to overcome it this past season. If it happens again next year, it will be a bad look look for Coach Malone.
In order to save his job, he must get the Nuggets to the playoffs next year.
