Nuggets position battle: Backup shooting guard

DENVER, CO - MARCH 18: Gary Harris
DENVER, CO - MARCH 18: Gary Harris

The Denver Nuggets have a plethora of guards and the back up shooting guard spot should be an interesting battle to keep an eye on as the season approaches.

The Denver Nuggets have their fair share of guards in the back court. As a matter of fact, they probably have too many guards on the roster.

However, the backup shooting guard will be a spot which is up for grabs as the season quickly approaches.

More from Nugg Love

We all know Gary Harris has pretty much solidified his starting spot at the two position, but there are still qualified guards who could be the first ones off the bench for him when he needs a breather.

Will Barton has only one year left on his current contract, so he will be motivated to play well so teams will be enticed to give him a good deal when he tests free agency. After a relatively down year last season, the former Sixth Man of the Year candidate will be looking to bounce back and prove Denver should give him a new contract. His competition for this spot will be tough though. He will most likely be competing with the up and coming Jamal Murray.

I know there has been talk of having Jamal start at point guard, but for the sake of this argument, we will keep him at his true position. Murray had a solid rookie season and is only going to get better. Especially now since he is fully healthy after playing all of last year with not one, but two hernias. Not to mention, the kid has an insane work ethic and is always working on his game.

Next: Denver should maintain hot shooting

He may not be nearly as polished as Gary Harris is since this will only be his second year, but he will definitely give Will Barton a run for his money for the back up shooting guard spot.
