The season is right around the corner for the Denver Nuggets, and it’s grinding time for Monte Morris.

He just signed a new contract with the Denver Nuggets, and he’ll look to prove that he’s worth it this year. Monte Morris won’t get a ton of time this year, playing behind both Jamal Murray and Isaiah Thomas, but he’ll have his times.

I really believe that the front office sees him as a future back-up point guard to Jamal Murray, and the Iowa State product is just getting another year of developing behind a veteran guy like IT. If Thomas leaves after next year, then it’ll be Morris’ spot.

This isn’t about the future though, this article is supposed to talk about what Morris will do this season. Morris is still a good option for a reserve point guard, a guy who won’t turn the ball over and can shoot pretty well.

In the Summer League this past season, Monte stepped up his game and proved his contract worth, with a team high 17.5 points per game, 6.3 assists per game, and 50% FG percentage. (Per NBA) While it was against lower competition, he showed a leadership and takeover ability that is coveted in reserve players these days. His play didn’t really match up with someone who is normally in their second year.

Morris still holds the record for the highest assist-to-turnover ratio in NCAA history. I don’t think I need to repeat that, it’s an absolutely insane stat. I mean, what else can you expect from a guy that was nicknamed “Big Game” in college? Now, as I said, his time will be limited, but if he can play well in the opportunities he’s given, he could end up gaining some more time as the season goes.
