Denver Nuggets: Takeaways from game against the Kings

Denver Nuggets Deliver

The Denver Nuggets are 4-0. 1 of 5 teams (including the Raptors, Pistons, Pelicans and the Milwaukee Bucks). Once again, Denver provided further evidence of their ability to play good basketball on both sides of the floor.

Whereas in the Denver Nuggets last game their defense was the main reason for victory against the Warriors. Against the Sacramento Kings the Nuggets defense (whilst still solid) played a lesser role. The likely reason for this is the Denver Nuggets offense was more productive against the Kings than it was against the Warriors.

With the Denver Nuggets up 68-55 by the end of the 1st half. Last night’s game is evidence that the Denver Nuggets understand the power of two-way play.

The Nuggets Are Locked In

Moreover, another thing that stands out about the Denver Nuggets performance against the Sacramento Kings is that the Nuggets seem locked in and focused on the task of winning. Denver have their focus on playing well on defense and offense.

That focus has helped them to execute at a high level regardless of who they are playing.

In short, Denver have the age-old formula for winning in the NBA and they are using it.

The Nuggets being focused has helped them avoid, the mistake they made of playing down to the level of their competition (e.g. the Perth Wildcats)

Instead the Nuggets proceeded to beat the Sacramento Kings with their equal opportunity offense. With the Nuggets having no less than 8 players scoring in double digits. Moreover, apart from Juancho (1 of 4), Malik Beasley (1 of 3) and Torrey Craig (1 of 3)  Denver shot well from 3 (50% if you exclude Torrey, Juancho and Malik’s 3’s from the equation).

Additionally, Denver shot a respectable 51.5% from the field. Interestingly, the Sacramento Kings actually shot better than Denver from the field (52.3%) and from 3 (41.9%).

Denver In Control

However, it was the Nuggets who walked away with the victory. How, or why did that happen? Simply put Denver’s two-way play enabled Denver to control the pace of the game. Leading Denver to get more attempts (99 compared to just 86) for the Kings.

That fact is bolstered by the fact that the Nuggets also had less turnovers (12 compared to 16 for the Kings) and more rebounds (49 compared to 39 for the Kings).

In the grand scheme of things the Denver Nuggets are exactly where they need to be. They have hit the ground running, using the winning formula in basketball of playing on both ends. As long as they stick to that winning formula, the Nuggets will only grow in strength as the bench and starters grow in experience whilst simultaneously keeping up their winning ways.

Furthermore, the Nuggets roster will get an additional boost when they reintroduce their injured players (e.g. IT, Will Barton etc) to their new style of play. It’s just the beginning of the NBA season and the Nuggets are only just getting started too.
